Kyoto’s traditional summer event, the Gion Festival, will be held again this year. This festival, originating from the Heian period to pray for the removal of epidemics and disasters, takes place at Yasaka Shrine from July 1 to July 31.
The Yamahoko Junko (float processions) on July 17 (Saki Matsuri) and July 24 (Ato Matsuri) are particularly noteworthy.
